It’s Never Too Late!
This post is about the second song on the “Dancing in the Light” CD named “Never Too Late”. I was watching American Idol one night (back when it was good) and I saw a man audition for the show who was clearly in his 70’s, well beyond their age limit of 27. He had written a song for his wife who had passed away and he just wanted to be able to sing it for her. His story moved me as well as the judges. They were very kind to him, and although he didn’t move forward in the show his story stuck with me.
Now, I know why the show’s executives picked 27 as the upper limit for eligiblity to be on the show. In their opinion, once you’re over that age you can’t have a successful music career. Well who made that decision? And why? I know many people, in music and other careers, who have become successful after age 30. Being over that age myself (well over!), and attempting to start in the music business, my rebellious side kicked in.
Never Too Late is one of those songs that was written by “Divine Download”. That’s when the song’s lyrics just flow out of your head onto the paper and your hand has a hard time keeping up! My smart-alecky side made an appearance right at the beginning – “Being the next American Idol was a goal doomed to fail, since that AARP card was delivered in the mail” - well, you pretty much know what you’re in for!
The hook delivers the true message of the song though – “It’s never too late to start to live your dreams, it’s not a trick of fate or as crazy as it seems. Life’s a joyous ride and much too short to wait. Don’t let the fear decide. It’s never, never, never too late.” How many times do we fall prey to the fear that we’re too old, or too young, or too fat, or not pretty enough to live the lives of our dreams? Never too late is talking back to FEAR. Not this time. You don’t get to decide.
Thanks for checking in! Next time I’ll be talking about the recording of Never Too Late.

Being the next American Idol was a goal doomed to fail
Since that AARP card was delivered in the mail
Well your hair was turning gray, now it comes from a bottle
And you no longer have the face of America’s Top Model
Chorus:
But it’s never too late to start to live your dreams
It’s not a trick of fate or as crazy as it seems
Life’s a joyous ride and much too short to wait
Can’t let the fear decide
‘Cause it’s never, never, never too late
Now your friends all think it’s strange but you’re crazy like a fox
‘Cause you ran off with the doctor who gave you your Botox
It’s really such a shame bifocals are such a bore
Can’t stay out all night dancing or wear stilettos any more
Chorus:
Fall asleep on the couch, your libido’s in decline
Your hippy clothes won’t fit from 1969
Rock concerts in the eighties your hearing’s not the same
All the wild nights that you used to have now are just a little too tame
Chorus:
It’s not too late to change your fate
Just find your spark to light the dark
Life’s so cool but it’s a school
Ignore the stings and grab your wings
Simple as this to find your bliss
You’ll go far ‘cause you’re a star
Find a way to seize the day
It’s never too late
It’s never too late
It’s never too late…..
Chorus:
